Murakamike offers not only architectural beauty, but also traditional performing arts
The Murakamike house located in the center of Gokayama is a special place where one can fully enjoy all that Gokayama has to offer at once through not only the exterior and interior of the structure, but also the garden and traditional performing arts.
Murakamike house is one of the main representative buildings in Gokayama conveying the architectural style of yesteryear to people of the present, and has been designated as a national important cultural property. This building, which conveys approximately 400 years of history, has several thousands of folklore materials on display. Visitors can sit around the fire pit and sip herbal tea while listening to the owner’s explanations. If you book in advance, you can even watch a “Kokiriko” dance and “Straw Hat” dance!
Moreover, the rose of winter tree estimated to be 300 years old growing in the garden is named “Gokayama-shibori”, and has bloomed beautiful flowers every year, carefully watching over Murakamike down through the centuries.
